Our immune system is a collection of organs, cells and chemicals that enable us to fight off germs, infection and disease. They include our white blood cells, known as lymphocytes and antibodies.
Looking after your immune system has become more crucial not just for seasonal changes, but now for this time of the pandemic. Researchers from Cedars-Sinau Medical Centre in Los Anele found out that people who received 45 minutes of massage a week had an increased number of lymphocytes. Lymphocytes are white blood cells that play an important role in defending the body from disease.
Professor Fulvio D’Acquisto an immunologist from the University of Roehampton found that massage boosted the number of white cells in patients suffering from HIV. Also, they with volunteers who received massage therapy compared to volunteers who just relaxed. The group that received massage therapy had 70% higher white blood cells then the group who just relaxed.

Furthermore, massage therapy decreased cortisol hormone, which is a stress hormone. Decreased vasopressin, a hormone that may play a part in aggressive behaviour.
The Touch Research Institute at the University of Miami carried out a study on women with breast cancer. After 5 weeks of massage therapy being performed 3 times weekly, 80% of these women showed improved immune function.
